Güneydoğudan Öyküler
Tales from the Southeast
1997
Güneydoğudan Öyküler gathers only a small part of the countless memories of the hundreds of thousands of people who lived through one side of Turkey's greatest problem at first hand. Most of them still serve the state: veterans, families of the fallen, doctors, pilots, those who waited, those who never went, those who are still there and those who came back. At the request of those whose memories these are, the names of the people involved and the places where events took place have been changed. After the interviews, the events were turned into stories, true to what actually happened, with the approval of each witness.
Contrary to what some would like to believe, Güneydoğudan Öyküler has nothing whatsoever to do with the left, the right or any other ideology. Those who witnessed what happened learned, very painfully, that the blood that was shed can never be sorted by notions as simple as left and right.
And what is written here is less a collection of memories than the plain expression of recollections that belong to the blood of a wound that never stops weeping, recollections so bound up with the soul that they can never be erased.
